Finnish Federation for Social Welfare and Health

INTRODUCTION

The Finnish Federation for Social Welfare and Health (STKL) is a national organization for collaboration in social and health policy, with the aim of developing welfare, especially basic social security and health services, preventing marginalization and increasing social responsibility and awareness of all citizens. The Federation acts and develops at local, national and international level. The Federation was founded in 1917, the year Finland gained independence.

The Finnish Federation for Social Welfare and Health organizes training, offers assistance in development work and acts as publisher of designated literature in the social and health field. The Federation publishes research studies, educational literature and manuals as well as other literature related to current topics on social policy and health issues.

The Federation is known for many events in the social and health field, like the Regional Development Days for Social and Health Policy, and the National Social Security Days in Finland, which take place every second year.

The Federation researches, trains and informs both on a national and regional scale by means of research and development projects, initiatives, testimonials, and publications. Advocacy and development work on social and health policy requires a wide-range gathering and distribution of factual information, which the Federation implicates by means of research and development projects that follow up current issues in social and health policy from various perspectives of different service providers.

Our strategic aims are to promote cooperation and collaboration between citizens, Non-Governmental Organizations, Communes and Government. Our work aims at multi-professional and multi-actor cooperation both by social and health sector employees and voluntary workers.

The member organizations of the Finnish Federation for Social Welfare and Health are regional social security organizations, organizations in the social and health field, and professional staff organizations. Supporting members are Communes, enterprises and firms, and organizations working in other sectors.

The decision-making body of the Federation is the Federation Management Board, the Federation Council, and the Membership Assembly, which meets every third year.

The Federation has its headquarters in Helsinki, and regional offices are in Oulu, Joensuu, Jyväskylä and Seinäjoki.

The Finnish Federation for Social Welfare and Health is a member organization of various international networks, such as the International Council on Social Welfare (ICSW), the European Round Table of Charitable Associations (ETWelfare), the European Anti-Poverty Network (EAPN) and the European Council for Voluntary Organisations (CEDAG).
